Weissenkirchen
The valley's biggest wine-growing community, wrapped around a fortress of a church.
The largest wine-growing community in the Wachau
Weissenkirchen in der Wachau is, by growing area, the biggest wine-producing village in the valley — a working centre for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling production surrounded on every side by terraced vineyards, rather than a village that happens to have a few vines nearby.
One of Austria's oldest fortified church squares
The village's defining structure is its fortified church square — among the oldest of its kind in Austria. Fortified church complexes like this one were built with defence in mind as much as worship, a reminder that this stretch of the Danube wasn't always the peaceful wine-touring route it is today; the same walls that once protected the village now frame one of the more distinctive village centres on the whole ride.
Weissenkirchen sits close enough to both Spitz and Dürnstein that it's easy to treat as a brief pass-through, but the fortified square is worth five minutes off the bike on its own terms, not just as a photo stop between the two bigger names either side of it.
